The International Playboys
Sexiful
Motron Records
Oh, joy, another riff-oriented record based on hackneyed ‘70’s boogie-woogie. But wait, is that a bit of syncopation? Was that a jazz breakdown? These boys do know how to keep it interesting. Perhaps it has something to do with coming from the ennui-inspiring plains of Montana, but the International Playboys have established for themselves a place at the lead of the retro hair rock movement that seems to be sweeping the nation currently with an off kilter swagger and a tongue in cheek view of the genre in general.
From the opening track “The International Playboys get a Bottle of Wine, Go to the Beach and get Fucked up” to the “My Sharona” bop of “The Wet Look” to the closing cover of Nazareth’s “Hair of the Dog”, TIP have put forth a record destined to shoot straight to the heart of any self-respecting hip shaker. And for the sword and sorcery geeks out there, the CD contains a tune dedicated to Michael Moorcock’s most famous creation, “Stormbringer, Eater of Souls.” All this and a revision of Gladys Knight’s “If I Was Your Woman”, sung straight, from the female viewpoint.
“Now you’re messing with a son of a bitch.” No shit. –Trevor Wallace
